The Wayland High boys’ basketball team finally got to play in a game this past Monday night against Matignon High School after a nine-day layoff.
Saturday’s scheduled home tip-off against Warwick Memorial High School was postponed (date TBA) last Friday due to the incoming snowstorm that never materialized.
The Warriors were clearly excited to play a game after over a week of practices. The Warriors jumped out to a 19-8 first-quarter lead and never looked back, winning by a final score of 60-35.
Matignon had played Wayland tough last month in a hard-fought 60-51 Wayland victory. This time around, the Warriors played much better on both sides of the floor.
Wayland was led by Jaleel Bell’s 27 points and eight assists. Junior forward Mark Bonner had his best game since returning from a mid-season injury to finish with 13 points and nine rebounds.
Coach Doherty commented after the game:
“The boys really worked hard at practice this past week.,” said coach Dennis Doherty. “It’s challenging for players to go through long stretches this time of year without a game but I think that we made the most of the week and did all that we could to improve. It was nice to see some of the things that we’ve been working on in practice help us win tonight.”
Wayland’s record now stands at 12-5 (5-2 in DCL Small). The Warriors traveled to Fenway High School on Wednesday and host Waltham High School on Friday night.
Waltham is 6-1 in the DCL Small and has earned at least a share of the DCL Small title. If Wayland wins on Friday night, they will be co-DCL Small Champions with Waltham. If Waltham wins, they are the league champions and Wayland will finish in second place.
Wayland won the DCL Small title last season and is going for a repeat. It will be a tough matchup for the Warriors as Waltham beat Wayland 56-50 at Waltham High in mid-January.
When asked about the upcoming game against Waltham, Doherty said: “It’s pretty
simple: they have something that we want. They have been co-champs for a week (since beating Weston last Friday), deservedly so. We want to go out and earn a share of the pie on Friday night. We’ll prepare as hard as possible and see what happens on Friday night. In order to beat a good team, we’ll need a big crowd on Friday night.”
Friday night will be Senior Night, honoringWayland’s six seniors: Tyler Mordas, Mike MacLean, Ian McLaughin, Mike Markwarth, Jared Brisson, and Charlie Kelman.
Also, Wayland will be honoring the long-time ‘Voice of Wayland Basketball’ Mike Crismond ,who will be announcing his last DCL boys game on Friday night.
