As a result of the dissolution of redevelopment agencies taking effect today, the city plans to lay off two employees.
Gov. Jerry Brown and state lawmakers decided to eliminate redevelopment agencies in an effort to channel money to the state to help address a budget deficit.
Coachella, like other valley cities, has opted to become a “successor agency” and assume responsibility for the shut down and dissolution of city redevelopment agency programs, projects, assets and obligations.
The city however has opted to not assume responsibility for the housing program and has passed on those duties to Riverside County.
Seven construction projects that total $5 million and include new traffic signals and downtown streetscape projects will be shut down as a result of the agency elimination.
The city will also lose out on $1.4 million in administrative fees used to administer redevelopment and housing projects and helped fund 19 positions.
The city will reallocate other funds and use reserves to pay for all but two of the 19 positions, which will be eliminated.
